Poem Poster is a collaboration with student writers from Baltimore high schools. Each illustrator was assigned a poem and tasked with creating a poster that visually interprets it.
This project was a new challenge for me, as it was my first time completing a full illustration using Adobe Illustrator. I usually work in Procreate, but I’ve grown tired of not being able to adjust line weight or scale without losing resolution. The poem I was assigned explores themes of creativity, growth, and inspiration—abstract concepts that gave me a lot of freedom to interpret visually.
I created two versions. In the one on the left, I imagined a space-station-like setting to represent the mind, filled with abstract shapes symbolizing thoughts and ideas. Stars float throughout the scene, representing creativity and bursts of inspiration. Everything is suspended in space, suggesting a shift from reality into an imaginative mental world.
The version on the right shares a similar concept but replaces the space station with a black hole, offering a different visual metaphor for the mind’s creative pull. Here’s the poem itself, along with my initial sketches. Everyone in the class loved the middle sketch—the one with the big star. I loved all of them and couldn’t decide, so I developed two. If I had more time, I’d probably make a third.
