The Tree 雪嵩

For the Riso Project, I created a short story titled The Tree, which reflects on my family and childhood memories. The idea of nostalgia in this piece emerged from a class exercise guided by Mai Ly, where we were encouraged to think about our childhood and past experiences. At the time, I was feeling homesick, and the concept immediately came to me—I wanted to create something that would express those emotions.
This project was a way for me to remember my childhood and the things that have accompanied me throughout my life. The initial brainstorming process started in class with prompts like recalling a favorite childhood snack, a best friend, and a unique place I had visited.
As I reflected, I thought about my parents, my childhood best friend—my cousin, my dog Bean, and a beautiful temple garden we visited in the summer of 2023, where there was a breathtaking tree. That tree became the central element of my story.
I began by sketching in my sketchbook, starting with the tree and then structuring the narrative around it in a comic-style format. Once the storyline was in place, I completed the drawings and coloring in separate layers using Procreate, then transferred everything to Photoshop to prepare the final file for risograph printing.
